Where the money leaks: the three gaps between an enquiry and a paid job
18 June 2026

Your revenue is not one number. It is the end of a four-step chain: enquiry, conversation, booking, paid client. Money leaks out of the gap between every step, usually without a sound. Most service businesses land somewhere between 8 and 20% from enquiry to paid client. Put plainly, about one in eight people who put their hand up make it all the way through. Not half. One in eight.
Here is the part that matters. A 20% lift at each of the three gaps is not 20% more money. It is roughly 73% more paid clients, because the steps multiply instead of adding. Same leads. Same ad spend. You just stop losing them on the way through.
Gap one: getting them talking
How they feel. They just put their hand up. Right now they are keen, a bit impatient, and they have messaged two other blokes at the same time. The clock started the second they hit send.
The usual roadblock. The enquiry lands while you are on a job. You mean to reply, then a day goes by. Missed calls with no text back. Web forms sitting overnight. By the time you get to it, someone faster already has them.
The fix. Reply in minutes, not hours. An instant text the moment a call is missed, so the conversation starts while you are still under the house.
Gap two: getting them booked
How they feel. Interested but not sure yet. They want to feel like you have got this handled. Any friction, any "I will get back to you", and they quietly drift to the next name on the list.
The usual roadblock. The chat fizzles out. You answer their question but never ask for the next step. Three days of back and forth trying to find a time. No simple way to lock it in.
The fix. Always ask for the meeting, and make saying yes take ten seconds. A booking link beats phone tag every time.
Gap three: getting them to yes
How they feel. Half decided. They are weighing you against the other quote and looking for a reason to trust you. When a meeting feels low stakes they do not show, and when a quote lands in silence they stall.
The usual roadblock. No-shows because nobody reminded them. Quotes that go out and then go quiet, with no follow-up, so they cool off and drift. For most businesses this is the biggest leak of the three.
The fix. Remind them before the meeting so they turn up. Follow up properly after the quote so silence never gets the last word.
The same root cause
Every one of these leaks comes back to one thing: the follow-up depends on you remembering to do it while you are flat out doing the actual work. That is the part worth taking off your hands, so the enquiry gets answered, the conversation gets a booking, and the quote gets chased, whether you thought about it or not.
Want to know which gap is yours? Book a chat and bring your rough numbers. Enquiries a month, paid clients a month, what a client is worth. Even rough numbers show you the shape of the leak.
