Klaviyo vs revenu: email marketing platform or full customer journey system?

8 July 2026 · by Adam Pilakis, founder of revenu

Klaviyo vs revenu comparison: a stream of envelopes flying one way beside envelopes joined in a circuit with a phone, calendar and star

    Quick summary

Choose Klaviyo if you're a pure-play, high-volume ecommerce brand where deep email and SMS data science, predictive analytics, churn modelling, advanced segmentation, is the growth engine and someone lives in the flows. Choose revenu if you want the cart and the campaigns and the phone in one system: online store, checkout, abandoned cart recovery, email and SMS, plus the AI answering calls and messages no email platform can touch.

    • Klaviyo is the ecommerce email and SMS specialist, used by more than 169,000 companies, with deep Shopify integration and predictive analytics
    • revenu runs ecommerce too: online store, carts, checkout and payments, abandoned cart recovery, email and SMS campaigns, alongside the AI receptionist, missed call text-back, CRM, bookings, reviews and reactivation
    • Klaviyo's free plan covers 250 contacts; paid plans scale with your list, and since February 2025 you pay for every reachable contact, emailed or not
    • revenu is a flat $599 + GST a month in AUD, with the build done for you
    • Fair warning: for a big pure-play brand whose whole game is list data science, Klaviyo's depth is real. This article says exactly where that line sits

Your business might not need more software. It might need fewer leaks.

On paper this looks like a clean category split: Klaviyo for stores, revenu for services. It's closer than it looks, because revenu runs carts, checkout and abandoned cart flows too. The real difference is shape: Klaviyo is a specialist layer that sits on top of your store and bills by the size of your list. revenu is the whole system, store included, at one flat price. Let's sort out which shape fits your business.

    02 Credit where it's due

    What Klaviyo does well

Inside its lane, Klaviyo is about as good as it gets. More than 169,000 companies run it, and for ecommerce brands it's the default answer for a reason: the Shopify and WooCommerce integrations run deep, the segmentation is genuinely sophisticated, and the automation flows, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, win-back, are the revenue engine of half the online stores you've bought from.

The data side is the quiet weapon. Unified customer profiles with full purchase history, predictive analytics like lifetime value and churn risk, AI-generated segments and content, and reporting that ties every send to dollars. SMS and email run from one place on shared flows, and the free plan, 250 active profiles, 500 sends a month, 150 SMS credits, is a genuine no-cost way to start.

If your revenue lives in a cart and a customer list, Klaviyo has earned its crown. I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

    03 The honest limits

Where Klaviyo may not be enough

Start with the billing change everyone's still discovering. On 18 February 2025, Klaviyo switched to charging for active profiles: every contact you can reach, whether you've emailed them in the last year or not. Before that, you paid only for the contacts you actually messaged. The practical effect: a business with 20,000 contacts that emails 8,000 of them now pays at the 20,000 tier until it prunes the list. Klaviyo capped the initial jump at 25% for existing customers, but list hygiene is now a line item, and "why did my bill go up?" became one of the most-asked Klaviyo questions of the past year.

Then the curve. Plans start friendly, around $20 USD a month past the free tier, but scale hard with list size: roughly $150 at 10,000 profiles, $400 at 25,000, $720 at 50,000, with SMS billed separately on credits priced per country, and Reviews sold as its own add-on priced by monthly orders. The features don't change as you climb; only the bill does.

Then the shape of the thing: Klaviyo is a layer, not a system. It sits on top of a store you run elsewhere, so the platform, the checkout, the reviews tool and the rest of the stack are separate subscriptions with separate logins, and Klaviyo is the line item that grows with your list. Powerful layer, but a layer.

And the limit that matters most here: Klaviyo works on people already in your list. The missed call, the DM asking about sizing at 9pm, the customer who'd rather ring than type, none of those are in any list yet. There's no AI answering your phone, no missed call text-back, no booking calendar. The moments that happen off-list are precisely where an email platform can't reach.

None of that makes Klaviyo overpriced or overrated. It's the shape of the category: brilliant at monetising a list, blind to everything upstream of it.

    04 The other side

    Where revenu is different

Here's the part most comparisons miss: revenu does carts too. Online store, checkout and payments, abandoned cart recovery by email and SMS, product campaigns and promos, all inside the same system, not bolted on top of one.

And around the cart sits everything a list-layer can't carry. One login covers the whole connected stack: your website and store, enquiry capture from every channel, missed call text-back within seconds, an AI employee answering calls and messages in your tone, CRM and pipeline, bookings and payments, email and AU SMS campaigns, database reactivation, review requests, and reporting. The framework behind the build is the rhythm: plug the holes first, then turn the tap on.

And nobody hands you a flow builder and wishes you luck. I build the system with you, around your process: live after the first 45-minute session, fully built over three sessions inside 14 days, with the build valued at $3,000 to $5,000 included, then support and a monthly showcase call as part of the price.

    The one-line version

Klaviyo monetises the list. revenu runs the whole shop: carts, campaigns and calls.

the layer bills by your list. the system just runs.

Picture one business, two systems. A customer abandons a cart at 11pm: on Klaviyo, the flow fires overnight and recovers the sale by breakfast; on revenu, the abandoned cart email and SMS do the same job. Now the 11am moment: someone rings to ask about stock, or DMs about sizing, and gets no answer. Klaviyo has nothing for that, there's no email address yet. revenu's AI employee answers in seconds, holds the conversation, and takes the order or the booking. One platform catches one leak. The other catches both.

    05 The money

Klaviyo pricing vs revenu pricing in Australia

Klaviyo, as listed at July 2026 in USD: free for up to 250 active profiles (500 email sends and 150 SMS credits a month, email support for the first 60 days), then the Email plan from around $20 a month at 500 contacts, scaling with list size to roughly $150 at 10,000, $400 at 25,000 and $720 at 50,000. Email + SMS plans add more, SMS runs on per-country credits, and Reviews bills separately by monthly orders. Since February 2025, every reachable contact counts toward the bill, emailed or not. Check Klaviyo's pricing page for current tiers.

revenu is $599 + GST a month, flat, in Australian dollars, plus a $500 build fee up front (waived when a current client refers you). That includes the full build, an AI employee trained on how you work, your website or funnel, ongoing support and the monthly showcase call. Month to month, no lock-ins. Usage costs apply for calls, SMS, email and AI activity, with live usage pricing in AUD here, and there's an unlimited AI option to keep AI costs predictable.

The pricing shapes tell the story: Klaviyo's bill grows with your list because the list is what it monetises, and it's one layer in a stack of subscriptions. revenu's price stays flat and the stack is the price: store, campaigns, AI, bookings, reviews, one system. Match the shape to your business, not the brand to the category.

    06 The decision

Choose Klaviyo if, choose revenu if

Choose Klaviyo if: you're a pure-play ecommerce brand at serious volume, predictive analytics, churn modelling and deep segmentation are genuinely your growth engine, someone owns the flow builder, and you're happy running it as one layer in a bigger stack.

Choose revenu if: you sell products, services or both, you want the store, checkout, abandoned cart recovery and campaigns in the same system as the AI answering your calls and DMs, and you'd rather one flat AUD price than a bill that grows with your list.

    07 Final verdict

    The verdict

If you're a large pure-play ecommerce brand whose growth genuinely runs on list data science, choose Klaviyo. Its predictive depth is the real thing, and at that scale the specialist earns the bill.

For everyone else selling online, the store, the cart flows and the campaigns don't need a separate list-priced layer, because revenu includes them, and it adds the part no email platform sells at any tier: an AI employee answering the calls and DMs your list never sees. One system, one flat price, both leaks caught. Weighing all-in-one platforms instead? 08 FAQs

    Klaviyo vs revenu FAQs

    Is Klaviyo free?

Up to a point. Klaviyo's free plan covers 250 active profiles, 500 email sends and 150 SMS credits a month, with email support for the first 60 days, and it stays free as long as you stay under those limits. Cross 250 contacts and you move to paid tiers, starting around $20 USD a month and scaling with list size.

Why did my Klaviyo bill go up?

Most likely the February 2025 billing change. Klaviyo now charges for every active profile, meaning every contact it can reach, whether you've emailed them recently or not. Before, you paid only for contacts you actually messaged. Suppressing contacts who haven't engaged in 6 to 12 months is the main way to bring the bill back down.

    Is Klaviyo only for ecommerce?

It's built around ecommerce: the integrations, cart flows and predictive analytics all assume a store and a list. But needing cart flows doesn't mean needing Klaviyo. revenu includes the online store, checkout and abandoned cart recovery alongside AI response, bookings and reviews, so smaller stores and hybrid businesses can run it all in one system.

What is the best Klaviyo alternative in Australia for service businesses?

Depends on your scale. Large pure-play brands comparing specialists usually land between Klaviyo and its direct rivals. For smaller stores, hybrid businesses and anyone tired of stacking subscriptions, revenu covers the cart flows, email and AU SMS campaigns inside one flat-priced system, with the AI phone front door no email platform offers.

    Does revenu replace Klaviyo?

For most businesses, yes. revenu covers the online store, checkout, abandoned cart recovery, email and SMS campaigns, CRM, AI employee, bookings and reviews in one login. The exception is very large lists where Klaviyo's predictive data science, lifetime value and churn modelling, is genuinely the growth engine. We map your flows before moving anything.

    Can revenu work with Klaviyo?

Yes. Businesses with both a store and a service arm sometimes keep Klaviyo for ecommerce flows and use revenu for the service side: AI answering enquiries, missed call text-back, bookings and follow-up. We design the split together so each system owns its lane and your customers never get double-messaged.

Not a demo, and not a pitch. We'll look at where your enquiries come from, whether your revenue moves through a list or a phone, where follow-up falls over, and whether revenu actually makes sense. If Klaviyo is genuinely your answer, I'll point you there myself.
